SunflowersWe live in a heavily polluted neighborhood, but I want to grow my own food. I do not want to rely on raised beds year after year, and so I have set out looking for ways to improve our soil. One of the ways I've found to remove heavy metals from soil, is to grow sunflowers. I will not be composting these however - I will be disposing of them as hazardous waste, after hopefully having them tested. I understand that sunflowers extract Pb, Ur, Sr, Cs, Cr, Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zn. They also have shown promise in degrading PAHs in soil.
